Fosmon 6 Outlet Surge Protector with 3.1A Dual USB Ports Review

Everybody has a whole slew of different electronics now. These devices are constantly getting more and more complex and as a result, more sensitive. Power surges happen all of the time as well. I am not talking about the really evident surges that instantly fry your equipment either. Every time something that uses a high load turns on in your house (like a furnace or air conditioner) you usually experience a small surge. Every time you see your lights dim a little when something turns on, those are usually accompanied by a small surge. All of these little surges add up and decrease the life of your electronics. This is why I recommend that everybody have surge protectors to plug their devices into. The Fosmon 6 Outlet Surge Protector with 3.1A Dual USB Ports is one that I tried out.

Design

There are two styles of surge protectors. There are power strip style protectors which usually have a few outlets in a bar shape. They get placed on the floor or a desk. They have a cord that plugs this bar into the wall. The other style is the wall tap style which hangs on the wall by the plugs themselves. The Fosmon 6 Outlet Surge Protector is a wall tap style.

The surge protector has a nice design. It is a glossy white plastic with 6 outlets on the front. There are two USB ports at the bottom. As well as a nice blue light at the top that illuminates to tell you that the protection is on. The corners are curved and the surge protector has a nice modern look when on your wall.

Protection

Most people know to look at the amount of joules that a surge bar protects against as a measure of how good the surge protector is. The Fosmon 6 Outlet Surge Protector has a joule rating of 1200J which is a good amount for devices which are only plugged in while charging or other devices that may not be super sensitive. I recommend a higher rating for expensive home entertainment systems. This amount should be good enough for that as well though.

The other important thing to look for, that most people neglect, is the Voltage Protection Rating or VPR. This lets you know how many volts are allowed through to your device before the surge clamping activates. This rating starts at 333V and goes up from there. The Fosmon 6 Outlet Surge Protector has a VPR of 900. This is where this device has a problem. Generally you want a VPR of 500 or less. The standard that most surge protectors use is the UL 498A standard. This is a third party certification to confirm that the surge protector meets the standards that have been agreed upon by this company. Within that standard any VPR above 900 is not even considered a surge protector. The Fosmon comes in right at the limit. To me that is unacceptable if you want to protect anything with it.

Conclusion

The Fosmon 6 Outlet Surge Protector with 3.1A Dual USB Ports is a attractive and very affordable wall tap style surge protector. It has two 3.1A USB ports as well to expand its functionality. The outlets are well spaced and it has a nice modern look.

The joule rating is decent. The VPR rating is not. In fact it barely qualifies as a surge protector. As a result I can’t recommend this to anyone as a surge protector, even at the low price that you can buy it for. With that being said, it does still make a great wall tap to expand the amount of outlets that you have available and to give you a couple of USB ports. It should still offer you some protection as well but I wouldn’t count on this at all.

If you want a nice looking wall tap with some USB ports for a good price and are not concerned with surge protection then the Fosmon 6 Outlet Surge Protector is a good choice. The problem is if you actually want surge protection, this wouldn’t be the best choice.
