If you have a car that doesn’t have Android Auto or Apple Car Play you know how annoying using your phone’s GPS can be. You want to use it to help you with navigation but getting your phone into a position where you can safely see it is a challenge. This is where a good car phone holder comes in. The UGreen Gravity Phone Holder with Hook is a good one to take a look at.
Design
The UGreen Gravity Phone Holder is designed very similar to most vent mount car phone holders. It has a clip of some sort to attach it to your car’s vent fin and a ball joint to allow it to be adjusted up/down and side to side. In addition to the standard things that I just listed, the UGreen Gravity Phone Holder also has a u-shaped standoff that sits against your dashboard to keep it a little bit more stable.
The hooks that are on the gravity arms are lined with rubber to help keep the phone stable. The hook at the bottom also has a cut-out to allow you to plug in a charging cable as well so that is nice.
To attach the Gravity Phone Holder to the vent fin itself the UGreen has a very easy to use mechanism. It is a metal hook on the end of a short bar with another plastic cap that gets pushed against the fin with a spring. It is the easiest mechanism that I have tested to attach to your vent.
Installation
Installing the UGreen Gravity Phone Holder is very easy. The first thing that you do is pull back the vent clip mechanism and slide the hook over the back of a vent clip. Then all you do is let go of the mechanism. The spring will push it back into position and hold the phone holder securely to the vent fin.
After it is attached to the fin it is just a matter of adjusting the u-shaped standoff so that it is sitting against your dashboard. Then the phone holder is ready to use. At this point you can adjust the ball joint so the holder is positioned how you want and tighten the lock nut. You can tighten this so the holder can’t be adjusted or tighten it just enough to allow you to make adjustments as you want without the phone moving on it’s own. The amount of tightness required will depend on the weight of your phone.
Use
Using the UGreen Gravity Phone Holder is basically the same as any other gravity phone holder. You place your phone into the holder and the phone’s weight will automatically adjust the arms. The bottom hook moves down and as it does the side arms come up to grip the sides of your phone. The ends of the arms do not rotate though. They do grip your phone but it would have been nice if they rotated so that they hold the phone completely instead of on an angle.
While testing the UGreen it did a pretty good job of holding my phone nice and stable. The arms adjusted well but are a bit on the narrow side. The hook is only around ⅜” wide. So if your phone is a little thicker or has a case it may not fit very well. It does hold well though if your phone fits. The u-shaped standoff does a great job of stopping your phone from rotating down on the vent.
The issue that I had had more to do with the hook mechanism. It holds great to the vent fin but there is nothing to stop the phone from rotating up. As a result if you hit a pretty large bump your phone can swing up and kind of bounce off of the dash. This could have been easily avoided by adding a small flange on the spring-loaded clip that would sit against the fin above. This is not a deal breaker but it is something to think about.
Conclusion
The UGreen Gravity Phone Holder with Hook is a pretty good gravity phone holder. It holds the phone well and installs very easily. There are a few small issues though in my opinion. They are not deal breakers but you may want to look at some other options if you think they will bother you.
If the design was slightly changed to allow the ends of the gravity arms to rotate, the hooks on the arms were made slightly wider and a flange was added to the spring clip mechanism this would be a great phone holder. As it is designed currently it is just ok. It works great but it could be better. With that being said I wouldn’t hesitate to tell someone to get the UGreen Gravity Phone Holder with Hook if these issues didn’t bother them.
